Treat your hair like the delicate fabric it is and it will thank you with shining glory. If you have highlights, balayage or color, being gentle is especially important. Trust the hair color specialists at Studio Z Salon to recommend the best quality hair regimes for your hair type.
Caution! Hair is most vulnerable when wet. The outermost layer is temporarily weakened as the structure swells up.
After shampooing, apply your favorite conditioner by working it into ends first and then smoothing the rest at the root. Using your fingers, comb the conditioner from root to ends to remove initial tangles. After you’ve rinsed out your conditioner, change the water temperature to cool and rinse strands to seal the cuticle layer and add a lovely sheen. Now, gather hair and gently squeeze out excess water. During this vulnerable state, vigorously drying with a bath towel or attacking knots with a brush or fine-tooth comb can end up breaking or splitting the fragile ends.
No bath towels, please. The coarse texture of the fabric roughs up the cuticle encouraging dryness and frizz. Using a “hair towel” (Try Kitsch Microfiber Hair Towel) absorbs more moisture so hair will dry faster but softer. Detangle with a brush that has very flexible bristles that move through the hair without pulling. Our staff recommends The Wet Brush which is specifically designed, you guessed it, for brushing hair while wet. Always start gently at the ends, slowly working up to the roots.
Incorporate a leave-in conditioner to give strands more moisture, seal the cuticle and keep it from snagging. Choose a formula designed for your hair type so you get enough moisture without weighing it down. For fine hair, try a lightweight product like Davines Dede Leave-In Conditioner. For thick hair, a rich cream like Olaplex #6 will work wonders and provide extra moisture.
Air drying your hair is the most damage-free option. If blow drying, always uses a thermal protectant such as Davines Melu Shield. Check your blow dryer screen often. Keep it dust and lint-free to prevent it overheating, prolong the life of your dryer, and keep hair from sizzling.
These simple steps will give your hair a boost of TLC and you will feel the difference!
